Frequently Asked Questions
A reading time calculator estimates how long it will take an average reader to read a piece of text, based on its word count and a chosen reading speed measured in words per minute (WPM).
Reading time is calculated by dividing the word count by a reading speed in words per minute, then converting the result into seconds: (words ÷ WPM) × 60. For example, 500 words at 200 WPM works out to about 2 min 30 sec.
200 words per minute is a commonly used average for adult silent reading, and is the default here. Use the Slow (150 WPM) or Fast (300 WPM) presets, or a custom value, if you want an estimate for a different kind of reader.
WPM stands for words per minute — a measure of reading (or speaking) speed. A higher WPM means text is read faster, producing a shorter estimated reading time for the same word count.
At the default 200 WPM, 1,000 words takes about 5 minutes to read. At a slower 150 WPM it's closer to 6 min 40 sec, and at a faster 300 WPM it's about 3 min 20 sec.
At the default 200 WPM, 2,000 words takes about 10 minutes to read. At 150 WPM that's roughly 13 min 20 sec, and at 300 WPM about 6 min 40 sec.
