A word counter is a tool that counts how many words are in a piece of text, along with related statistics like characters, sentences, and paragraphs — it's the online equivalent of the word count shown in a word processor.

Words are counted as text separated by whitespace, so punctuation attached to a word — like a comma, period, or apostrophe — doesn't split it into multiple words or change the count. Multiple spaces between words are also treated as a single separator, so extra spacing never inflates the total.
Word count measures how many words your text contains, split by whitespace, while character count measures every individual character, including letters, numbers, punctuation, and spaces. A single word can be many characters long, so the two numbers are usually very different — this tool shows both, along with a character count without spaces.
Characters counts every character exactly as typed, including spaces, tabs, and line breaks. Characters (No Spaces) removes all whitespace before counting.
Reading time is estimated at 200 words per minute and always rounded up, so even a single word shows a 1-minute estimate.
A sentence ends with one or more of . ! or ? — repeated punctuation like "..." or "!!!" still counts as a single sentence ending, not several.
